I've always used a hiking "pole" of some sort. For years I hiked with a closet dowel about 6' long. Found it really useful when sidehilling and it didn't...

I agree. Hiking poles are great. They have some now that weigh ~4 oz. or less. They give stability, balance and take pressure off legs. Also gives your arms...
