I'm one of those folks whose fingers and hands tend to swell with exertion in hot weather. Using poles keeps my hands higher than if they were just swinging...

Training also seemed to ready the body/feet That's actually how I've aggravated mine, hiking staircases with my loaded pack. It just suddenly flared up...
