The permit fee certainly isn't trivial, but, for all but the lucky few that
live close to the Canyon, the fee is only a tiny part of the cost of a trip
there....

Yes, I too think the cost of a permit is a little high, especially for
a solo hiker. But in general I think the permit system is wonderful.
