miles of GCNP hikes ago, and have had no friction or bunching...

Yep,
When you show a lack of respect for the Canyon it tends to swat you -
hiking or rafting.

I think it might be the sock liners sorta acting as a lubricator so friction
with your foot doesn't keep the sock in place. Perhaps your feet were
sweating...
